University Park, February 15, 2005—Governors State University's film series workshop "Transformations" will host guest lecturer Dr. Becky Nugent on Tuesday, February 22, at 4:30 p.m. in Engbretson Hall on the university's main campus, 1 University Parkway, University Park.

The "Transformations" Film Series workshops are non-credit workshops that are free and open to the public, GSU students, faculty, and staff.

The workshops are designed to explore provocative academic themes through various films, selected by the guest lecturers.

Nugent's workshop will explore feminism, both "essentialist" and "postmodernist."  She will show the film "In the Bedroom" to illustrate these themes. The film is centered on the struggles and tensions tragedy brings to the surface of a marriage.

Nugent said, "In the Bedroom" is an intensely beautiful film, both in the writing and cinematography. However, I selected this movie for GSU's film series because it allowed me to understand feminism in a new, more subtle light."

Nugent expressed her own surprise at the movie's revelation of feminist themes. "This was no small feat because I have been involved in gender studies since 1977."

Nugent has a Doctorate in Composition and Rhetoric.

The "Transformations" Film Series workshops are held periodically at the university. They are single workshops and do not require advance registration. For more information, call 708-534-7090.
