Southland Area Theatre Ensemble (SLATE)
Announces Summer Show

University Park, IL, March 4, 2009 - The Southland Area Theatre Ensemble (SLATE) at Governors State University announced that it will produce the hit musical “Into the Woods” as its inaugural production.

“Into the Woods” is the perfect way for us to introduce SLATE to the south suburbs,” said Director J.R. Rose.  Rose, a local theatre director, is also an educator and director at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. “The show’s ensemble cast will allow us to draw top community theatre talent from around the area. This will not be one to miss.”

SLATE’s first production proves to be an exciting show for all ages. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's classic musical about magical enchantment masterfully blends the stories of familiar storybook characters like Jack (of beanstalk fame), Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Little Red Ridinghood. Once protagonists of their own fairytales, the characters now meet each other as they venture into the woods.

“It is really a masterpiece,” Rose said.  “Children will identify with the familiar characters and enjoy the humor and hummable songs, while adults discover that the show is saying so much about growing up, parent and child relationships, accepting responsibility, morality, and wish fulfillment and its consequences.

Auditions will take place on June 1 and 2. For more information, call the audition hotline at (708) 235-2244 or e-mail slate@govst.edu.
