Governors State University Hosts Free Performance by China’s Zhejiang Butterfly Performing Troup

University Park, IL, January 25, 2008 – The College of Arts and Sciences at Governors State University, in cooperation with Valparaiso University's Confucius Institute, is sponsoring a special performance by China’s Zhejiang Butterfly Performing Troup. The performance will be the first show by professional Chinese artists at the university.

The free event will take place on Friday, February 15, at 8 p.m., at The Center for Performing Arts on the Governors State University campus.

The troupe, which hails from China’s Zhejiang province located to the south of Shanghai, is made up of the principle performers of the Zhejiang Provincial Singing and Dancing Theater, including 11 musicians, seven dancers, two acrobats, and one Kun Opera actress.

The group will present programs featuring traditional Chinese instrumental and vocal music, folk dance, acrobatics, and excerpts from the classic Chinese opera The Peony Pavilion. All troupe members have toured extensively in and outside China and have performed at many world class venues such as the Golden Hall of the Vienna Opera House.

The Zhejiang Butterfly Performing Troup is visiting the Chicago area in February to perform at the opening ceremony of Valparaiso University’s Confucius Institute. The performance at Governors State was added as a result of the burgeoning relationship between Governors State, Valparaiso University, and Chinese academic and cultural institutions.

“We hope that this visit will further strengthen the flourishing cultural and economic ties between China and the Chicago region,” said Eric Martin, dean of GSU’s College of Arts and Sciences. “We are pleased to offer this free event, which showcases the unique and beautiful performance of this well known troupe.”

Seating for the event is general admission. Free tickets are available at www.centertickets.net or by calling The Center box office (708) 235-2222. Governors State University is located at 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois.
