HNU China Studies Program

China Studies International Summer Program  

Brighten up your summer and join us for a unique China Studies Program.

Hangzhou Normal University

Founded as a teacher training school in 1908, Hangzhou Normal University (HNU) has a history of over 100 years, which has bestowed the institution with a glorious tradition of producing first-rate teachers and educators at different levels for the whole Chinese nation. Through a centurys development, the University has now become a comprehensive institution of higher education with a full spectrum of disciplines, covering such areas as arts and sciences, humanities, education, music, engineering, information technology, business, law, medicine and nursing.

Program Description

The China Studies Program (CSP) at HNU provides students with a comprehensive learning experience that combines China Studies courses, visiting E-commerce enterprises, Chinese Kung Fu and field trips.

Language of Instruction: English

GSU Credit: 3 credits can be issued for this program if the student wishes to receive credit. Students will pay regular GSU tuition for 3 credits and will enroll in PHIL4254: Chinese Thought. There may also be the chance to earn 1 credit. If the students do not need any course credit, they can audit the course for $75.

How to Apply

In addition to the Study Abroad Application packet, please send the following documents to Office of International Services:  

  • Up to date transcript (can be unofficial) 
  • Recommendation letter from the head of the department 
  • Motivation letter in which you explain why you want to attend this program in one-page maximum 
  • Resume 
  • Photocopy of Passport picture page 

Application Schedule 

  • Estimated Course dates: July
  • Application deadline: mid-April
  • Notification of Acceptance: late April
  • First Payment to GSU: at time of application 

Program Expense: HNU often offers scholarships for GSU students which will waive the $800 program fee.

The program fee includes housing, China studies courses, field trips and some meals. HNU offers single rooms equipped with private bathrooms, communal kitchens and laundry. 

Other Expenses:
Chinese Visa & International Health Insurance $200, International Flight $1,200-1,800, Tuition, Meals and Personal Expenses.

GSU Study Abroad Scholarship: Eligible students can also apply for the GSU Study Abroad Scholarship. Instructions are located in the Study Abroad Application packet. Awards are typically between $500-750 which can be used to subsidize flight cost or other associated expenses.

Course Descriptions:

中国互联网经济(China's Internet Economy)

China's Internet Economy: Internet economy has become a new growth point of China's economy. The content of this course includes the origins and development of China's Internet economy, the application of Internet in various areas of China's economy (retail, finance, healthcare, real estate, etc.), China's leading Internet companies (Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu), the development of mobile Internet in China, the future of China's Internet economy.

中国城镇化发展(Chinese urbanization development)

Chinese urbanization development: China is now vigorously promoting urbanization. This course introduces the process of China's urbanization, the main problems of China’s urbanization and the future of China's new urbanization. The content includes: the development process of China's urbanization, the employment problem of migrant workers, the synchronization problem of land urbanization and population urbanization, Chinese household registration system,  the shortage of public service provision, the future development of urbanization with Chinese characteristics.

中国改革开放专题(China’s Reform and Opening)

This course will provide a comprehensive analytical and empirical discussion on China’s economic reform. Two main questions are addressed: How did China implement economic reform? What were the state and society relationships during the reform era? The course first offers a background discussion of China’s politics before the economic reform: the land reform, the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. Topics included state’s role in economic reform, the local governments, state-owned enterprises, private sectors, and international linkages. After that, the course discusses China’s political development in the context of economic growth.

中国民俗(Chinese Folklore)

Chinese Folklore: Folklore is the study of a nation’s inheritance lifestyle and traditional culture. This course includes the origins and characteristics of Chinese folk, Chinese traditional culture, Chinese traditional religion, Chinese traditional art, Chinese imperial examination system, Chinese traditional festival, Chinese traditional etiquette, Chinese food culture. Through this course, students can learn about the history and current situation of Chinese folk, feel the traditional Chinese lifestyle and philosophy of survival, learn more about Chinese history and culture, strengthen the awareness and understanding of the basic national conditions.
